Long ago, especially during the winter months, people could see water spouts rising from the sea from the watchtowers of Zarautz. They were Basque whales. These animals came to this coastline to feed and give birth in a safe environment.

At that time, whenever the watchtower gave the alarm, the fishermen of Zarautz would set out in their boats with harpoons in hand to hunt the whales. Their meat, blubber, baleen and other parts were then used for different purposes. In 1878, the “last whale” caught using traditional whaling methods was hunted here.
